Ideas on weathering Lionel Fastrack

I know this has, more than likely, been discussed before. I need some input on weathering Lionel Fastrack. I have seen videos on painting the roadbed with a thin back/brown wash. Have you done this and how did it work? Also, has anyone painted their rails with much success? Finally, does anyone recommend putting balast on the sides of the roadbed for effect. I just need some ideas, and pictures if you do not mind sharing, of what has worked with you all in weathering fastrack. Thanks so much for your help.
