I obtained thiss Chessie Tender in an auction lot. I wanted other items in the lot but as with all "lot" sales you get everything in the lot. When I picked it up it sounded as if there was a bunch of loose parts or gravel inside. I was sorting through this last night and almost pitched this tender in the junk pile to be discarded.

I took the cover off this morning and found that there are no motors, speakers or electrical parts in the tender. Just a wheel the turns as the car goes down the track. This wheel has something inside it that makes the noise. The part number for the shell is 1130-27.

I am attaching some photos. I think that this tender is working as designed and that the noise is supposed to mimick some sort of train sound but I am not sure as I have not encountered this before. (Yes I am rather new at all of this).

If anyone knows the Lionel number or any information that I can use to get to know this tender I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

That's "the mighty sound of beans"(my term) from the 1980's used with some low-end set locomotives.

You're quite right, there's a bunch of plastic "beans" inside the cylinder that shuffle around as it rolls on the third rail, creating a chuffing (by a long stretch of the imagination) sound.

It tends to sound more like a rain stick with hiccups.

Thanks Rusty!

I'll put it up for sale for just a few dollars so it finds a good home somewhere. I only wanted one item in the lot and now have a box of cars and stuff that I can't use on my layout. I figure I'll clean these cars up a bit and maybe sell them for 2 or 3 dollars and maybe defer the cost of the purchase.

Thanks again!

Dave,

My grandson loves the sound of that tender, I always have to run it when he is over.

I'm getting together a small layout for him to use at home.  Maybe some the the cars etc you got in the lot may work for that.  Let me know what you have and maybe we can save each other some time and money.

My email is in my profile.

Kevin,

I checked your profile and I didn't see your email address.

My email is dgardner9@verizon.net

I haven't completed looking at everything but here is what I know so far.

Lionel 6465 Sunoco 2 dome tanker from before 1958. It has a steel frame and according to the research it is a variation D model with coil couplers. This car is a nice car. with a rough OB

Lionel SL-SF Frisco Lumber car. Plastic Frame No Box

The Chessie Tender as discussed here. No box

And several cabooses in various condition.

By far the Sunoco car is the best and looking at ebay is selling between 20 and 30. If I can get $20 for it I'll be happy.

The rest of the lot value is determined through the eyes of the beholder.

I will get back to the box later today with the rest of the list.

I will definetly work with you on the tender if that is all you want.

Shoot me an email and let me know.

Thanks!

Dave
