Beertrain,  It may be more appropriate to state how you will run this train.  Conventional or command.  If command, which system, DCS or TMCC/Legacy.  At that point the sound choices may be more suitable to your needs.

There are pros and cons to each system and this may maximize your experience.  As an example MTH sounds and features are accessible via bell/whistle combinations in conventional.  TMCC/Legacy are not.  You operate in COmmand than specific strong points for the various sytems would come into play.  Lionel tends to have richer sounds, but MTH has synchronized chuff and smoke that is considered the best in the industry (imho), etc....  G

That maybe true, but I am just pointing out (because others have asked) it is important to determine how you run your trains and what is important to you before you just select the cheapest or easiest.

He seems to be talking high end brass (at least on 2 of the choices) which I always grimace at gluing magnets and reed switch to get chuffs, plus the lack of selectable chuff and smoke control.

So I still think it is important to provide answers based on need.  These are the questions I would ask a customer when I managed a Hobby shop.  I would not just push what I think is best for him/her based on my likes.  G
