Has anybody successfully used Insulation Displacement Connectors (IDC) for locomotive wiring repairs, including instead of soldering connections on both older (post war) and newer locomotives and systems?  What is the typical AWG used in different years of locomotives (especially postwar) -- is that in the old repair manuals or do you just have to measure it?  DC output whether Lionel or MTH should be below 30V so that likely would not pose a problem for IDC voltage.  My interest is in doing some part replacement and repairs without disturbing (too much) the existing soldering and very short wires.  A cheat?  Maybe, but that would preserve the ability to do a solder connection later in most cases.  These connectors would be both easier that soldering or crimping.

I've always used heat shrink tubing and solder.  I have several different kinds of IDC connectors I have picked up over the years.  I occasionally use them under the layout but not on anything on the topside of the layout.

Might be a good idea to include pictures of the devices you are talking about.  Also maybe pictures of examples of where you would use them.
