I picked up a pair of older GG switches from a forum member and had the chance to install them this week. They tracked well and seemed to be trouble free until I wired the rails. One of the turnouts shorted and displayed a remarkable amount of smoke for the short time the power remained on the rails. Working backwards I discovered the plate that pivots to set the route was a bit loose, allowing it to come in contact with the center piece but only when the plate was set to the divergent route. Go straight, no short, set for the divergent route and pop. There was no way to replace the rivet to secure this but the simple fix was to apply a layer of electrical tape to the surface of the plate so that when it slides it does not short against the center rail. There was just enough room to get it to continue to pivot and not bind. Problem solved! I wonder if this was an issue with some of the older GG switches?
