Happy New Year to all! I have a fairly large intermodal yard that is what I would consider almost complete (yes, until I expand it for the umpteenth time) but what it is missing is the ground surface. The entire layout is 3/4 plywood, covered in 2" foam painted a sand color and breadboarded in 1 x 8 clear pine. The reason the surface has not been completed is that I honestly have no idea what to use and how to use it. What do intermodal yards typically use? Every picture looks different on line. If there is a consensus for a particular substrate, where do I get it and what techniques.  Any help this forum can give me would be greatly appreciated!

I painted my inter-modal yard grey, then sprinkled the wet paint with N-scale grey ballast. I applied the ballast by hand, sprinkling it between my thumb and first finger, to control the amount of ballast and to keep the application thin. IMG_2024

This gave the surface some texture, which looks more interesting, and also gives the Mi-jack better traction. After the paint dries, use a soft brush or vacuum to remove the loose gravel.

I used a hardboard material and cut it to fit in between the fastrack rails. then I held it in place with a few (minimal number) of wood screws.
