Getting ready to begin a new layout and would like to focus on a Intermodal Yard.  There does not seem to be much in the way of o scale intermodal equipment.  I have a few scale fork lifts and stackers, but would like to have a crane of some sort.  The Lionel lift is too much of a toy for my liking, but I would like to build something in that vein.  I'm also looking some scale yard tractors to move the containers around.

What are you all using?  Would love to see some pictures and hear your suggestions.

Thanks,

Bill

Bill welcome to the Forum, as to Intermodal Equipment we all feel your pain and have been in the same boat, except for custom builders who do an extraordinarily good job on modern cranes and the like, seems the big manufactures aren't ready to fill this gap.  You can look under the topic Intermodal and find  a tread with many pages of more information.

For my layout, I bought some trailer chassis made by WSI.  These are 1:50 scale.  They also make tractors to go with them but most of them are European.  I also have a Kalmar Gloria unit (1:50 scale) that is a small 4 wheeled crane unit.  It is made by Motorart.  Unfortunately I cannot find a way to easily connect the containers from Atlas, MTH, etc. to this unit.

WRT traveling cranes I have built some different versions - see the attached pictures.

WRt vehicles I have found it tough to find any unless one wants to pay a few hundred dollars. I did purchase one for about $40 but can't find a picture of it. However if you google 1:50 diecast container crane you will see some pictured.

Ken:

Please send me an email to ModelStructures@cableone.net and we can start designing the craneway you want. The pictures show three different custom designs. One structure has two long stationary sides. The other structure has one side stationary while the other side slides up and down on a track rail. The third design has two moving sides on track rails. In all designs the crane slides back and forth on the craneway while the hook is manually raised and lowered with a thumbwheel on the motor house.

Did you find any container loaders?
