Is there any chance in damaging the electronics in a PS1 or PS2 engine if attempting to operate it without a battery installed...or will it just not respond when the power is applied?
I am considering running consist of two MTH GP38's...one with or without a battery... and the other one with a BCR.

PS/1 will NOT function without a battery or BCR. It'll start up, but you can't get it out of reset without a battery.
PS/2 will actually run in command mode with no battery, but you can't do a factory reset, and if you power down, you'll have to add it to the remote again. Also, a brief power interrupt, like running over a switch, will stop it dead and you'll have to add it to the remote again and start it up.
Moral of the story? Install a new battery.
