Is this a sign of bad motor windings?

have a 257 steamer that has started acting up lately. After a short time running, (not even once around the track) it will stop and trips the circuit breaker in the ZW. When I retrieve the engine, the underside is very hot. I pulled off the shell and don't see any wires with broken insulation. Is this the motor windings? It's a shame because the motor, and wheels are very clean, so I don't want to swap them out, but would like to get it back on the layout.

It could be a shorted armature. Check each segment to see if there is any continuity to ground.
