Hey Guys,

I've never had any luck getting the crossing gates and block signal detectors to work properly together. I recently purchased a new DZ-1010 and 1011 combination and am having issues getting them to work together on my layout. Here's how I have things connected:

Red wires of the DZ-1010s and DZ-1011s all connected together. They are then connected to the AC power.

Black wires of the  DZ-1010s and DZ-1011s all connected together. They are then connected to the ground.

White wires of the DZ-1011s connected together and then connected to 1 of the yellow wires of one of the DZ-1010s.

Blue wires of the DZ-1010s connected together.

When I initially apply power, the master DZ-1010 starts flashing, the warning bell sounds, and the arm starts moving down - in a very choppy fashion. The other DZ-1010's lights blink but the arm does not move. I need to pull the 2 DZ-1010s off the layout and individually get them hooked up to a transformer to get them back to their original state.

I've tried this multiple times - no luck.

I have the red and black wires from the DZ-1010s and 1011s hooked into the 2 bus wires for my accessories on my layout. Assume that's ok?

Switch orientation on the DZ-1010s

  • SW 1 - Open (Mode 2)
  • SW 2 - closed
  • SW 3 and 4 - closed (Medium speed)

I also have Lionel Legacy control on my layout - not sure that makes any difference.

Any thoughts on this? I've spent multiple hours on this already and am getting very frustrated!

Thanks!

1. You should verify correct operation before placing everything on the layout by connecting to a spare 12-14 ACV power source and connecting everything together first on a work table. Makes it much easier to detect any issues. That way you know that if it works on the table and not the track then there's something wrong with the track hook-up.

2. Try connecting the detector white wires to the gate white wire instead of yellow.

3. The system works at 12-14 ACV. If your accessory bus wires are carrying a higher or lower voltage, that can cause issues.

4. Legacy should not have any impact on operation.

thanks for the info. The install instructions were not clear with respect to the detector wire connection to the crossing gate. Also, my bus wire for the detectors and gates is set at 16 VAC. IMHO, if it is a problem connecting to that higher a voltage, the instructions should also have that warning.

I will take the white wire of each detector and connect them separately to the crossing gates.

I will also run a power line that's 12 to 14 VAC for the gates and detectors.

Hopefully, this will fix these problems. I hate spending over $100 for an item and then have problems with it.

Mr. Zander should update the installation instructions to be a bit more clear.

ok - still not working the way I'd like.

I connected the detectors and gates to the 12 VAC versus my bus wire.

I connected the one detector white wire to the master gate yellow wire and the other detector white wire to the yellow wire of the slave gate.

The blue wire of each gate is connected together.

When the detector connected to the master gate is activated, the master gate goes down. Nothing happens to the slave gate.

When the detector connected to the slave gate is activated, nothing happens to the slave gate and nothing happens to the master gate either.

Here's what I want to happen. I have 2 parallel tracks with trains going in the same direction. When a train passes either of the detectors, I want both gates to activate - period. Can someone help me make that happen?

I took the crossing gates and detectors off the layout - again. Set it up on my work bench. Things appear to work as intended. Red/black wires of all 4 connected to transformer 12 - 14 volts.

Blue wires of crossing gates connected.

White wire of one detector connected to yellow wire of crossing gate.

White wire of the other detector connected to yellow wire of other crossing gate.

All works proper on my work bench.

However, in taking things off/on the layout, 3 of the wires connected to the base of the slave crossing gate came loose. I need to resolder. Not sure of the orientation of the wires on the terminal on the crossing gate. Can someone send me a pic of what the orientation is supposed to be? Remember, this is the slave, not the master.

Thanks,
