I can help to a certain extent as I researched and got 3/4ths of the cars you mention over a long period ending last year. But there are other far more expert passenger car collectors on the Forum and I hope one or more weigh in.
I think that you are right about the four sets of 21" cars produced. All the car numbers you give tally with what I have got but as I say I have not got the complete run. I think that there were indeed 3 parlor cars produced - two of them were in the six car set K4688E that I got BUT note what I say below about cars being mixed and matched between sets.
One way of confirming the car numbers is to check the auction sites (including FleaBay) where there are photos of the cars/boxes. However, you have to be wary of the fact that sellers sometimes substitute one car for another to make up a full number - especially the baggage, combine, tavern and dome cars.
A few sets are still advertised as available from former main K-Line dealers although the prices average about $150 per car. Eastern Depot is one but you need to check the actual stock position with them.
Hope this helps.
I have 'em all. 16 cars total is correct:
4688B 6-car set:
- 41031 Tavern #10313
- 42439 Coach #2439
- 42950 Obs. #2950
- 43002 Parlor #3002
- 43302 Combine #3302
- 43606 Dome #3606
4688C 4-car set:
- 43601 Dome #3600
- 40312 Tavern Lounge #10312
- 43000 Parlor #3000
- 42952 Obs. #2952
4688D 2-car set:
- 43303 Combine #3303
- 46735 Baggage #6735
4688F 4-car set:
- 46734 Baggage #6734
- 43605 Dome # 3605
- 41040 Coffee shop/Lounge #10400
- 43003 Parlor #3003
I had one. The body and window height were incorrect for the Daylight, although quite good for other Pullman cars, such as Santa Fe. The closest you can come for reasonable $ is the GGD series. If you build your own, almost perfect extrusions were made a couple decades ago, and may still be available in 10' lengths.
Craig,
Alan's numbers match mine, I too have these cars and they are lovely (just like most if not all 21" K-line cars).
Bob2 is right in that these are not matched well to the prototype, like other cars offered. The GGD cars are more detailed and in many ways more correct to the prototype, but having bid and lost more than a couple times on sets of them, they aren't in the same price point ball park as the K-lines.
Good luck, these do come available on a fairly regular basis on the auction sites and here on the buy/sell sub-forum, often single cars too which is great.

I agree. The OP is after the K-Line 21" versions of the Daylight cars and has got a definitive list of them, which is great, so maybe a comparison with other versions is surplus to requirements. Nonetheless it is right that the K-Line cars in question are generic compared to the GGD offerings, which included some of the articulated cars. Just try to find them though and if you do the prices are a few orders of magnitude higher.
The Lionel 18" Daylight versions rate a mention as fine products of the now practically bygone era of Lionel aluminum cars.
I have eleven of them, and though not prototypical, they sure are nice. Considering what I paid for them and comparing to what else is out there, I sure can live with them "as is".
This should help.

Good luck, these do come available on a fairly regular basis on the auction sites and here on the buy/sell sub-forum, often single cars too which is great.
Stout's sold several nice sets of SP cars last month. If memory serves, there were at least 3 different large lots.
Thanks for the list with pricing, it's very helpful. I just received 5-21" cars and finding information online has been challenging.
Marty's prices seem quite reasonable. It is tempting . . . But I already have ridiculous numbers of K-Line 21" stuff.
Marty isn’t selling, that’s the list from the Legacy K-Line site.
I too have all 16 cars for this set, plus two duplicate numbers. Unfortunately the duplicates are the baggage and baggage/coach add on set which I believe is quite common. My challenge is that I can't run all 16 without changing the lighting to LED first.
Does anyone consider the express boxcar to be part of the set? I have one of those as well. Just curioius.

I have never seen an SP freight car in Daylight colors - at least prior to 1960. They did have a few heavyweight passenger cars in Daylight colors. It does look nice, though.
K-Line made those SP cars back in 1991. They were labelled as Railway Express Agency on the sides.
The car number was 6457 and it was the same size as the Lionel 6464 series. They also had die cast trucks and couplers.
I have the 21" Metrolink set. Beautifully done cars, though sans passengers. I often wonder what became of the K-line 21" tooling. They did a nice job on the Superliners, Surfliners and Bombardier cars. The regular passenger cars were nicely done, but more generic. On auction sites, they command very high prices due to their rarity. Would love to see them produced again.
I have a set not listed above. They were a 6 car 18" heavy weights for Lackawana in the 4400 Series. These were made exclusively for the Train Station in Mountain Lakes NJ in 1991.
Excellent detail all around however they did not have a detailed interior. I have searched for kits to do the interiors to no avail.
The same set of Lackawana cars was made in in 2003 but with different names on the cars.

Bob - The car is a total fantasy car. However, the K-line set is a fantasy set as well as none of the cars match the prototype Daylight. For me, it's just a nice train. The GGD one correctly captures the articulated diner and coaches and the 3/4 dome cars were never painted in the daylight scheme. The colors are too dark too. To me, for running at the club, I don't particularly care about the accuracy as the public doesn't know and if someone does, it leads to great conversation. Notice the "graffiti" on it. The other side is signed by Nick Ladd. The car came out of a prominent TCA member's collection here in Arizona when he auctioned off a lot of his collection. Another nice conversation piece.
Calico - This series of boxcars are scale cars from the late 90's. Somehow I've managed to pick up something like 5 or 6 others painted for other roads like NH, B&O, PRR, RI, and a few I'm not remembering. They are not based on any real prototype, but more of a composite design. Again, for running long trains for the public, I don't mind. The are good quality cars.
I am aware of the cars you are talking about though. I have a ton of them in WP picked up from an auction lot. Trying to sell those off over time.
While I have lots of K-line cars, SP is the only complete set I have. Others are individual cars I've picked up over the years to mix in with other manufacturers cars, primarily GGD.

Yes they are. I have the 21" Sounder set but was waiting for the Tri-Rail set to be released. These are massive cars and do stand out in the crowd. Stupid me once let a two-rail set go by me on ebay by not hitting the BIN; the offered price (even with the shipping) was less than most of the stock three-rail listings. And much less than I paid for my Sounder set.

You mean this 3/4 dome car:

I stand corrected. Thanks for the info!

I wish Sunset-GGD would make a brass version of that 3/4 dome car to match the previously made GGD Daylight sets. The K-Line full dome is a nice stand in, but of course it is not quite correct.

You don't want to know what I paid for my Metrolink set. Let's just say the seller didn't know what they had. Metrolink leased Sounder cars, some VMT cars and some Comet cars to supplement their fleet. I picked up a New Jersey Transit Atlas Comet car to add to my set to mimic one of the San Bernardino line consists. They've since bought Hyundai-Rotem cars and run them mixed with the Bombardier cars on most of their trains now. The cab cars have been stripped of their lighting and controls and are used as coaches.

GGD was really close - possibly closer than any other in O Scale. I am more or less happy with my fleet of inaccurate Kasiners (modified) with Speer extrusions interspersed.
I maintain that my Lobaugh trucks, while sand cast and unsprung, are the most accurate overall of any in O Scale ever. The Speer extrusions are off by one corrugation, but you have to be an expert to spot it.
I did take one K-Line SP 21” Observation, cut several corrugations off, and machined the windows higher. Better, but still no cigar.
But in the end, for most folks, K-Line, even the Daylights, are pretty darn good! Too bad they didn’t last.
How do these K-Line cars look behind the K-Line 4449?
sinclair posted:How do these K-Line cars look behind the K-Line 4449?
Not good, I would think. The K-Line 4449 is undersized, selectively compressed and is much shorter than a scale GS-4. While the paint would most likely match, the size comparison would be very noticeable.
Maybe with 15" cars, the look would be better, but not with 21" cars.

To go with my Atlas MARC Comet cars, I acquired two Metro North Comets to go with them. I just need to get one of them two-railed. I do have a three-rail set of Amtrak Horizon cars that maybe one of them will migrate to the MARC train. Note that I have two MARC cab cars, one of them also needs to be two-railed.

It would be an interesting project. Probably would be done in brass in limited numbers as I am only aware of them being in the Daylight Scheme (new info to me), the Sunset Scheme, and Amtrak Phase I. However online I see one in B&W white looks like it could possibly be SP painted in UP paint?
I didn't realize how interesting these cars were until I saw this page. Wow.
Craig... i am shocked... i figured YOU would have atleast one of everything by now!
700e's i know you cant have just one of!

I would be in for one if 3rd Rail made them and I agree they'd have to be brass ($ ouch). IMHO 3rd Rail is overdue for another run of SP Daylight cars! (Scott Mann, are you listening?)
The dome car is an interesting piece of SP history. I hunted around for an O scale version but none appears to have been made.

Actually, they were made in O scale at least once, in aluminum by Phoenix Railways. Years ago I found one in the original box at a meet and so I bought it. The same seller had a few of the other Phoenix Railways SP cars, including the articulated cars, but not the complete set. As I recall, the Phoenix Railways SP 3/4 dome car is about 20" long, so pretty close to scale length, since the prototype 3/4 dome cars were about 81' long. Most of the other Phoenix SP cars are too short for scale though at 20", since I believe the prototypes for them were 85'.
Here is a photo of some of the Phoenix Railways cars from another thread: https://ogrforum.com/...rs#77875232741051584
(I know there were also articulated cars made by Phoenix Railways, but they are not in this photo.)

Yes, the SP 3/4 dome cars were painted in UP yellow/gray/red, in addition to daylight colors (and later in SP silver/red). I found this in another forum regarding consists including SP cars in UP colors for the City of San Francisco:
"Starting in October 1954, SP heavyweight hamburger-grill cars (painted in Armour yellow and gray) began to replace the coffee shop-lounges. SP 3/4 length domes (also painted Armour yellow and gray) were assigned to the Overland in 1955."
