A couple of years ago, I found that K-line locomotives would not play with Panasonic
batteries in the sound system. I find now that Sunbeam batteries don't work either.
Everyready and Duracells work just fine for the shutdown sounds.
It occurs to me that it ought to be possible to rig a charging system and use NiMH
batteries.
Or perhaps a charging system to use a homemade BCR if a large enough capacitor
can be fouund.

Some tests I ran this afternoon, lead me to believe the problem with the batteries
that don't work is one of internal resistance of the batteries or "Rg".

There is nothing on the battery packaging that says "batteries in this package are not very good". One has to learn which is which by experience.
The K-line locos draw a "slug" of battery current at shut down. The Lionels may do this also but at this point I don't know.

I have hit instances over the years where a 9 volt battery would not fit. There is a tiny size difference and shape difference in 9 volt batteries. I dont remember which was the smallest one.
Since K-Line uses Lionel RailSounds boards, one would assume that a Lionel locomotive would have similar power consumption.
Yes, but some light functions are now driven off the board also and remain on until the battery is cutoff. So it is possible K-line added some additional loads to the circuit. G

Wayne Renga (www.jandwelectronics.com) installed a charging circuit in my 3rdRail NYC Niagara so i could use a BCR. That may work in a K-Line locomotive, too. Email him and ask.

I assumed all of the batteries we were talking about were alkaline. If some where carbon batteries, I can see why there's a difference.
