If you just want to rid it to run with a PS/1 board, it's easy.  Use the PS/1 tether, they're plentiful, and the pinout is well known.  There's only four pins, two for the motor and two for track roller and wheels.

Thank you very much for the quick response. You're quite right about the tether with the PS 1 unit. What I am concerned about is the pin-out from the engine itself. To be sure there are only four pins in a line, but I do not know to what they are connected in the engine. Also while I have several PS 1 units with tethers, I do not have any sockets to go with them. Normally the socket is on the engine. Would you know any sources for the sockets?

Well, if you're putting PS/1 into it, you probably will have to open up the locomotive to make sure of the wiring.  Trying to do this "blind" is likely not to end well.

I have plenty of the 4-pin PS/1 locomotive connectors if you need one of those.

Thank you for the offer of the connectors.  I'm pretty sure that I will need one.  Now all I have to do is work up the courage to pull the shell off and see what goes where.

It's not rocket science. 2 of the pins will likely go to the pickup rollers. The other 2 will most likely go to the DC can motor and whatever else might be in there that runs off of DC. If you're lucky, the positive side  of the DC will have red wires. or might be marked on the motor.
