Evening folks, I have a question.  I have a K-Line, K-1527, Route of the Rockies set from 1997 that is still in the box with the plastic still wrapped around it, with the original price tag on it.  Never opened, never used.  I got it just for extra rolling stock.  Should I rip it open and add the cars to my set, or would I be wise to hang on to it?  I am not into the hobby to make money but I would hate to make a large mistake here.  Your opinions would be appreciated as I do not have a large knowledge base to work with in these matters.  Thank you.

And thanks to Radio Ron for your help.

Michael, this set is of particular interest to K-Line collectors. It was made exclusively for Great Plains Model Distributors from 95-97, and then was a catalogue item after that. It may be one of the rare sets with the substitute boxcar, #K514602 Missouri Pacific. 200 of these cars were made as a replacement for the #K5146 car which was taken for the K4545 Colorado Eagle passenger set. While the market for K-Line is not as lucrative as Lionel, it is a niche that will only grow over time. Personally speaking, I searched for over 10 years for the 514602 car. And when the opportunity came to acquire one, I did not hesitate. One last thing. The road names in that set are becoming increasingly rare. The set you have rarely comes up on the big auction site..... and when it does it usually sells quickly.
