Yes, 86ta355sr, karma should never be underestimated. I strongly believe that most times positiveness flowing from an individual reaps an abundant positive flow back to that individual.

Congratulations. I gave up on auctions long ago because the trains almost always went for more than they were worth. Once in a while I do pick something up at an Estate sale.

Sometimes the gods smile down upon us, and bequeath us with our just deserves.   Good for you.  A nice story, with a good ending.

Good for you. I, like you, try to help as many Forum members as possible find items they are looking for. It is one of the fun parts of our hobby.

There were some K-Line UP passenger cars in this lot...

And, no, not everything fit in the truck.  I had to leave my Lab as collateral while I went to FedEx to ship some items.  That's a story in itself!  

When I got back, my Lab was laying next to another guy's stuff!  Well, the guy was rubbing his back so I can't blame him-I'd done the same!  

I'll post pictures when everything arrives.  

I'm so happy and thankful for (a) having a job to buy this stuff, (b) the great deals, (c) a nice day, (d) an understanding wife and (e) having some of the things I've always wanted.  Life's good here.

The interesting thing about this stuff is the boxes ranged from mint to tattered.  Luckily, the trains themselves were as described, mostly new.

Congratulations!  I know how it feels to look for something for a long time and then not only find it, but get it at an unbelievable price.  That is one of the great pleasures in this hobby for me and there are many varied things I love about it.

The K-Line 21" UP cars are great!  That is a real find.  I have the 18" versions and love them, but want to upgrade to the 21" ones some day.

Found time to unpack more trains!

Above: Another JLC Challenger (NIB) with a K-Line 21" Dome Coach.  I didn't need another Challenger, but I couldn't let this one go.  With all those K-Line UP passenger cars, I needed another Challenger to pull them-At least that's what I told the wife   She wasn't impressed 

Above:  ZW with (2) 180 Watt Powerhouse Transformer.

Above:  (4) 180 Watt PHs.  I now have all the power I'll need for the new layout.

Above:  MTH UP 50 Ft DD Boxcars, 2 different 6-Packs.  NIB.

You're welcome!  When I started searching for these cars, it was hard to find an accurate list of what cars were actually made.  I looked at K-Line Legacy site (or something like that) and saw some listed.  However, I don't believe some of the information is accurate and have sent the webmaster information to update it.

As far as I can tell, the cars I listed are all of the K-line UP 21" cars made.

The sleeper, dome coach and dome diner were sold in a 3 pack.  The other cars were 'add-on' models.

86TA355SR, I totally agree with you. You did nothing wrong. IMHO, the relatives of the poor guy who passed away took the easier road. They didn't want to be bothered by taking the time and effort to figure out what the trains were worth and selling them on their own through eBay or some other venue. And then having to ship them to the various buyers. I can see their point of view. That is a lot of work and effort but for sure they would have made more money. It's a shame the poor fellow didn't have a close friend who could help the family sell the trains. Bottom line is they new the rules going in (I assume the auction house explained everything to them) and you played by the rules. Fair is fair. 

Congratulations on your awesome score! I'd much rather see someone get a good deal like you did rather than someone where they just want a good deal so they can flip it and make money. You will use the trains and enjoy them. Correct? I'm sure that fella will be happy to look down on your layout and see them running.

You know, when I pass, I really want someone to enjoy my collection.  I've left detailed instructions with my 'ol lady to make sure that happens.  A fellow UP fan will love my items and I can almost see his/her smile now...

we always hear "buyer beware". but shame on the seller that doesn't do some research. when we had our will drawn up, I told my Mrs and my daughters that when I go, don't just sell my stuff off without finding out what they are worth.

 My Grandfather did nearly the same on occasion.

He offered what he wanted to pay that day.  

 The original owners could by them back at cost, anytime, and checked with them again before he sold them.

 No saint, but a heck of a nice man.

I could be wrong, but I get the feeling I could end up with a similar situation negotiating with you "86". Nice respectful haul.  

 (coming from the mouth of one who had his life long designated A-B-B-A inheritance literally taken, even after a specific NO was given. All during an already raw deal for Grandma from a "best friend" who told her it was a "square deal" price)(the GG-1's alone, a few sealed, one a 1st year GG. He bought one of each, & two of a few, new, and had 14 +boxed non-ran (but just the never opened, were worth what the joker "paid" for everything. $3 average per piece, engines included. Then he sold most of it, lying as Grandma tried to even buy back some of what he took, that he shouldn't have! Very little was recovered from him. Just a few low buck items of mine.

  (I'm pretty sure Dave of YT Train night at Dave's has the pre-war brick paper on pressboard, Jefferson Transformer "Powerhouse" [with the missing roof]. I caused one of those rips  But repaired the porch light)

And maybe the estate proceeds, just went to the state.

This is an old thread, but I'll comment anyway.

I don't think it would have mattered whether the folks handling the Estate knew the theoretical value of the trains unless there was enough stuff to handled by a specialty auction house, or if they were willing to take the time and effort to sell the stuff by themselves.
And even that is no guarantee of getting top dollar. I've purchased and seen many other bargains on EBay. It all depends on who is looking when the auction is going on.
Same can be said about live auctions.

"86" wrote that there were a few other train folks there. He just wanted the stuff more than anybody else.

Incidentally, when I attend a live general merchandise auction with trains, often the non-train folks present over-estimate the value of the trains, driving the price above retail.

Finally: since you were the high bidder, the trains would have gone for less had you not been there, and purchased them.
