Hi everyone, Quite a while ago I goofed up and picked up my Kline GP-38 TMCC by the top of the fan housing forgetting that it is detachable there for the battery to go in. Needless to say, the engine dropped to the floor and hasn't run since. I took the shell off and inspected it for loose or torn wires etc. One of the boards was completely detached while two others were loose. I tightened the two and put the other one back where it belonged. I put it on my track, powered up my Z4000 and the red light on the transformer starting blinking and there was no response from the engine, lights, sound or movement. The only wire I found unattached was a light grey one that was solid, not stranded and had about a bare 3/16" on the end of it. Other than that, everything looked okay. I would really like to get it running again because Kline made some very good engines. Any ideas out there in Forumland?

You might try turning the flywheels of each motor by hand several turns to make sure one of the gearboxes didn't get jammed from the impact causing the overload protection to "kick in" on the transformer.
In addition to Rick's comment, DON'T power it up again until you've verified free running and where the gray wire connects!
You appear to either have the motors stalled as Rick says, or something is now shorting the track power.
I would start by pulling the power lead plugs (usually 2 pin with red and black wires) though I have seen other colors from the mother board. That is normally the AC input from the trucks. There should be 2 plugs. Repower engine and see if short still there. If so, the truck pickup wires may be damaged and shorting to the chassis.
If not, it is something shorting on the board or wire harness. Might have to disassemble and inspect as you go. Could the gray be part of the antenna? G
I had rotated both flywheels earlier when I took the shell off. They both moved freely. The only difference I noticed was that one motor seemed loose compared to the other as far as it being connected to the wheel assembly. Being that the gray wire is solid, would that give someone a clue to where it belongs?
The gray wire could be the antenna wire or motor wire.

Well, that's a problem! The motor and truck should be SOLIDLY together. There is a screw under the truck, make sure it's tight. I don't know that this would cause the issue, but if the gears jam it could.
Paul, Does this unit have motor driven fans? If so the solid wire may go to the fan motor or CV board that drives. None of which explains why it is dead. G
GGG, No motor driven fans.
AcelaNYP-John,Thanks for that wiring diagram! I will unbutton the engine and take another look. At first glance at the diagram, it looks like that gray wire is definitely for an antenna. The electrocoupler will be an easy fix. I'm not getting any lights. Under normal working conditions, if the engine is on the track and I power up the track, should I see any lighting or do I need to first address it with the remote?
For TMCC, the lights should come on. Have you tried AUX2 to see if that toggles them on?
Is it still tripping the Z, since it damaged the coupler I would look at the rollers, they might be touching the truck frame.
Bill
Why not just gut it and install a ERR DC Commander in it???
Marty
Marty, That is probably the best solution but not one I'm interested in. On my layout I'm modeling the 50's and early 60's with first generation diesels. I bought this one back when I was buying anything and everything Milwaukee Road. When I finally decided on my layout timeframe I realized that the GP38 was too new. So it is for sale as is.
Why not just fix it? I can't imagine that it's that difficult from the description, though dropping it might have done something ugly like bend an axle.
gunrunnerjohn, I don't have the skills or knowhow to fix it. Plus, I don't know what is causing the problem nor how to find out what is causing the problem. I learned a long time ago not to mess with something that I'm not familiar with. My skills in this hobby lie elsewhere. You on the other hand are very proficient in the electronic end of this hobby and I admire you for that. Please take this as a compliment and not someone trying to blow smoke up you know where. Paul
I feel a breeze, better tighten my belt.
I thought about picking it up, but there's always the chance that something really bad mechanically happened and I couldn't get part cheaply enough to make it worthwhile, so I decided not to.
Gunrunnerjohn etal: I took some pictures of the engine. I hope it shows that there was physically little damage (excluding the coupler) to the engine. Electronically your guess is as good as mine. Again, the gray wire is definitely the antenna wire.
