Hello,  I am new to this forum, so please be patient with me.

I have a Lionel KW transformer that when plugged in and switches off position, everything seems ok.  when I turn switches on no voltage coming out.   But when power is applied with a load (like a train on the track) the red light comes on.  Coil and everything looks ok.

I was looking for advice.  I thinking of switching out the circuit breaker.  Is that what you recommend?

Thanks for any advice

Is this a transformer that hasn't been used in a long time? While it could very well be a bad circuit breaker, based on my own experiences with my KW, I would guess you have a genuine short going on there. The coils may look good, but visual inspection may not tell you anything, there could be a short there. The fact that it shows up when you actually apply power tells me something. I am sure others will pipe in, but I would be leery of assuming the circuit breaker is bad, my guess is it is something shorted.

I'm singing with the chorus, top suspect has to be the circuit breaker.

A shorted turn in the coil won't kill all the voltage, it'll just result in a lot of heat in the transformer core.  It'll also typically exhibit a loud hum as it'll be drawing lots of current.  Finally, the coil will actually start smoking as it burns off the enamel insulation.

I am in the process of changing out the circuit breaker on my kw with a newer version. The new circuit breaker came with spade connectors but the one wire connection is a flat rectangle wire. My guess is to solder a wire to this and shrink wrap them then make my connection, any other suggestions?

The flat wire is on the right still soldered to old circuit breaker.
