for some reason, my KW transformer appears to have lost the function to activate the whistle or bell. I have a #5906 switch for the “other” function, for locos with whistles AND bells, and that still works normally. The fault seems to be present on both sides of the controller, which makes me suspect the power connection to the red lever?

Either the whistle switch is not making good contact, or the whistle rectifier is bad. Change the rectifier, part #1041-13, as they do go bad.

Replace the defective rectifier with a diode. This conversion is discussed many many times on the form.

Susan, you've derailed my evening with your amazing work of model railroad engineering. I was planning to do something useful but I've been in Susan's Run room for the last 45 minutes, from KW repair to layout plans to history. Thanks for providing the link. And for the KW repair info. After looking at that, I think I can handle the whistle diode.
