I have a large flat area on my new layout that I have a scenery question about. The area is shaped like about 1/3 of a pie. Two straight sides and a curved third side. The only thing going into the area is a radio tower and small control building. What would you do for scenery in the area? I don't want to just leave it flat and cover it with ground foam.Help.

Ballpark of three feet each way.
Make mounds/undulating hills with some foam and flex paste, then static grass the heck out of it. A radio tower in a field makes sense already, so I would just make the "nothingness" interesting.
First you get about 500 buffalo....
Forty Rod I like that idea.
The fall area and guy wires for the tower should eat up most of it. Plain dirt and weeds. A road for the building, some poles for electric. The rest as boilermaker said.
Thanks, guys. Now I have some ideas and am off to the train room...
as mentioned not uncommon to have fields near a radio tower, but to add interest you might consider
a park- football or baseball field
small race track horse or car
farm fields with a crop like rows of corn
drive in movie theater
blimp or hot air balloon landing or taking off
Well without being specific, I would yield to the value of a natural scenic treatment. An undeveloped field perhaps with tree rows bordering it or stonewalls perhaps. All to often model railroads turn into jammed up collections of everything imaginable in an attempt to "fill" space, and the resulting atmosphere in carnival like and not a realistic representation of railroading's imagery. Give value to natural surroundings.
Good Luck

I totally agree with Bob. Open space is the rarest of commodities in a typical layout, and can be one of the best features you can add.

I second boilermaker1. A small knoll with a bit of elevation to break up the flatness. Maybe even a narrow road going up to the antenna for servicing with some small trees and bushes................Paul
A closed cemetery with a caretaker building at the road coming into the grounds
I think a corn field with an ethanol plant would be nice. I just can't get industry out of my blood.

How about a Cold War Nike site.
Bob,
I like that better than the ethanol plant.
