laser vs CNC Router

I am contemplating purchasing a desk top laser or CNC router for modeling purposes, primarily structure modeling. I am interested in comments & suggestions regarding machine features and the advantages & disadvantages of each type machine. This will be strictly a hobby pursuit for me and a friend not a business venture. Thanks in advance for replies.

You should also consider 3D printing.

edit: BTW, many CNC routers also have laser cutting heads.
