OK, this post is concerning LCL Service.  This is based on the new Menard's C&O car, and an article in the recent RMC.

How did such service work:

1.  Freight station to freight station in major city only?

2.  Freight station to freight station even on branches like the recent RMC article about a PRR branch?

3.  Were these "unit trains", like the Cotton Belt/SP BLUE STREAK, the SP OVERNITES?

4.  Did any of these cars have passenger equipment so to run on the head end?

Or it just depended on the train or the railroad?

I'm not sure how C&O LCL service worked. But we had LCL service on the White Pass and Yukon up here in Alaska. wpyr-containers-4463

The green one is for general cargo, the silver one is refrigerated, and I believe the orange one was for dangerous cargo such as explosives (mining equipment and supplies were a significant commodity for the railway).
