How do i achieve pic 4 from pics 1, 2, 3? I see where the light source (to the right of the red marrette) is but not sure if tying it in to that will work. i unplugged the and touched LED string ends to the pins - yes lit up, however the diode got really hot - hot to the touch.
any help, advice, etc etc.

Pretty hard not knowing what the LED string he's using is rated at. That would be the first information we'd need to make any suggestions. Since it's a PS/1 locomotive, I'd just design it to run on track power.
