Just installed new led's in my 022 remotes. They are great and come on, pretty much full brightness with little to no voltage and don't scald your fingers when touching them. BUT... they are way too bright. In fact they will blind you if you are anywhere near on top of them (or less than 45 degrees off angle).
Has anyone tried painting them to tone down the brightness? What type of paint is used on the original incandescent bulbs?

Generally what is blinding about them is a very narrow angle of beam. If you covered or sanded them with a diffused surface, they probably would be better.
ZZ, I was not aware that the replacement LED's didn't permit the use of the switch lanterns.
I agree. A little "buffing" with a wire wheel did the trick for me.
I will try the sanding/buffing idea - before I try painting them. Thanks for the suggestions.
Pingman: I don't have the push and turn bulbs for the lanterns yet. I ordered the screw types for the remotes only. I will have to make sure they will fit as the screw in ones are quite a bit taller than the original bulbs.
Ok, sanding the lens did diffuse the light and is a major improvement, BUT still very bright. with 12 switch bulbs, way too much.
I have just dipped one bulb in Testor's green enamel to see how that will look. Waiting for paint to dry (literally and figuratively).
Ok, so after dipping in Testor's green, they are nice. Look good turned off (proper color) and look nice illuminated, giving about same brightness as regular incandescent painted bulb at 14-15v as soon as they turn on.
