Hello,  I’m new to the forum.  I have been a collector and operator of toy trains for many years and a member of the Wichita Toy Train Club in Wichita Ks.  I am having an issue with a Lionel Legacy 6-34598 PA Alco A-A unit I just purchased.  It was new in the box.  On the club layout the engine won’t respond to commands unless you put your hand over the engine then it works fine.  On my home layout which is TMCC the engine runs great except for the horn is intermittent unless you put your hand over it.  All my other engines have no issues on both layouts.  I checked the antenna connection and the solder joint to the metal plate fell off so I fixed that.  I also extended the antenna with additional wires but the problem still exist.   Any thoughts?  Thanks

James,

From what you're reporting you're on the correct path here and have made good progress.  Since the problem is clearly with the locomotive and not a Cab-x or Base-x, or connections between the respective base and the track, diagnosing the loco is the correct next step.

If there's nothing apparently amiss with the antenna or its connections inside the loco then I would check the PC board that the antenna is connected to.

One question first.  Are the two 'A' units both powered?  If so have you run them independently?  Do they both exhibit this problem when run independently?

Also, a forum usage question.  How did you decide to post this in the 3 Rail Scale (3RS) forum?  It's not a 3RS issue, and the warning that hits your eyes when you start to post in 3RS should tell you in much detail why it's the wrong forum. Did you see the warning?  As a newbie here did it make sense to you?  The text might need some tweaking.

Mike

I did miss the warning,  can I repost it?  What would I post it on.  Only the one A is powered but both have an ID.  The non powered unit seems fine on its own.  Smoke unit responds OK.

Thanks

Jim, warning is very prominent so I am not sure how we could make it more noticeable....  I moved this thread to the proper forum.

I believe the TMCC boards on those are still plugged in, in later years they soldered them on to make it one unit.  Since they're removable, swap the small TMCC board between the two engines and see if the issue moves with the board.  If so, we know what is causing it.
