For years I was annoyed by the early Lionel steam locomotive sounds until they finally achieved four chuffs per driver revolution.  (I was so annoyed when the 783 Hudson came out with its "sounds" of one chuff per revolution that I immediately sold it!  With those large diameter driving wheels, it could be going 80mph and I got a chuff it seemed like every 10 seconds!)
But, I digress.  The current LionChief steamers have only two chuffs per revolution.  Why?  Isn't the chuff rate now driven by the electronic package, not a physical cam?

Why are we back to two per revolution?

Back in the day, "Sound of Steam", the chuff rate was as you say, one revolution-one chuff.  Personally, not having the knowledge of how real steam locomotives sounded, I was quite happy with SOS in my Great Northern Northern and my Nickel Plate Berkshire.

In the many years since then, I have learned, mostly through the knowledge of forum members on other forums as well as this one, that four chuffs per revolution is the correct number.

However, to the average layman four chuffs may sound excessive or possibly annoying.  But to those of us who have become more knowledgable about trains, four chuffs is like a good sweet dessert.

So the bottom line as far as why Lionel chose to limit the chuff rate may be marketing and possibly electronics, especially in the early days.

That must have been tough for you. Imagine the "pure h*ll" the post-war guys endure every day!  😂

That went over my head.

The original poster was so annoyed by the lack of 4 chuffs and even sold one engine because of it.

So imagine how guy who run post-war with no chuffs feel....
