Lionel 1688E E-unit replaced with ???? | O Gauge Railroading On Line Forum

Found this 1688E at the Greensboro show this past weekend in decent shape but was missing the e-unit lever. Put it on the track and the light works but a loud buzzing and vibration? Removed the shell. This is what I found in place of the e-unit? Anyone know what it is?

It’s a bridge rectifier, which converts AC track power to DC motor power. The two leads that go from the + and - route to your motor brush. The engine will only run in one direction.

Looks like the two DC outputs are shorted

Someone's attempt to run it on DC track, reversible by polarity change, but they missed the memo on the proper wiring.

The armature(brushes) or the field may be powered by the full wave bridge rectifier - just like with the AC 3 position reverse - either way works.

Thanks all, I will reinstall the proper E-unit. Strictly old school AC for me.
