working on a lionel 182 magnetic crane. only turns left and raises hook. any ideas? i've checked the wiring and everything looks correct.

The big issue is usually the controller box, made of bakelight, and if small pieces break off, then you might not have continuity through all the contacts in the box. I would check there first.
I have one and had to do some careful fixin to get the controller to work right.

The motor has a dual-wound field so that when power is applied to one winding it will turn in one direction, and to the other winding it will reverse. When pushing the "down" button, if you hear the clutch engaging, then the motor is likely not getting power, either due to the contacts in the controller, the wiring or a disconnected/broken field connection.
Has anyone made an alternative control box that will withstand heavy use? If so, information please. thanks.

Yes, you can build your own. I built two of them because I built my cranes using parts. You need a plastic project box, two momentary switches and a SPST on-off switch.
I'll get some photos tonight, I just had to pull them out because of a water leak.
