What is the proper amount of current to illuminate one of these beauties?

It would normally be 12v to 14v. I think it takes a #53 bulb. If you are running in Command, I would change out the bulb to a 1445, 18v, and that way you would not cause any heat damage to the lens...

Even better would probably be one of the LED replacements, no heat at all from those.
What kind of LED would I use and where can I buy it?? Does it need anythhing special to mount the LED??
I'm thinking of something like this: 12-18V LED E10 Base Bulb. I've used these in 022 switches, I had to take a little plastic off the top and then just polish it a bit on my bench buffing wheel.

If I use the bayonet style base, then can I use the original base (socket?) in the bumper and not have to add a new LED base???
Yep, you should be able to just stick them in and go.

I'll stipulate up front that my traing was in history and philosophyso.......what are the perceivable differences between the 12V and the 18V. And to keep it even simpler, which would you use and how much power do I run to it??? The circuit will have only #260 bumpers on it and I can adjust the power level as needed.
If you run command, you'd probably want the 18V ones, as you'd probably be going over the max current for the 12V ones with 18V on the track. For conventional, I'd probably go with the 12V ones as you rarely get the track to anything close to 18V.
I run command but I am wiring these bumpers isolated (seperate) from the track. Which would be brighter, 12V or 18V?? I can do either.
I'd use the 18V ones for any command layout.
