Who has one, and how functional is it? Saw one for a decent price, and wondering if it's worth it, or if it'll break pretty much as soon as I put it on the layout.

It is a completely manual accessory. The original one is fairly scarce, it must not have sold well. I had one when i was more an operator than collector. Did not think much of it, so i sold it. There was a modern era repro, i got that one on closeout.
I cannot really see an adult enjoying it, and it might be a bit much for a younger child.

Thanks. I had my doubts as to whether my three year old would be able to operate it, and it looks a bit tedious. I'm a sucker for a good deal, but I may pass on this one. What I really need is some rolling stock for my LC+ E33. Forgot that it's closer to scale than my O27 trains ... so most of my rolling stock is a bit undersized for it.
Deuce- The Lionel Magnetic Gantry crane is a great accessory. I am looking for one to add over one of my sidings. I don't recall if you have one already so forgive me if you do.

My layout has every accessory found in the 1957 catalog, so I had to have one. It was one of the last accessories I acquired, since it looked so boring. In reality, it is actually somewhat fun. Takes skill.

Bob, I do not. I'll look into it.
yea- kind of like the claw game at the arcades. The magnetic ones can lift anything out of a gondola or flat car. Even plastic stuff can be done by gluing a small washer to the top. Search youtube for some videos.
Deuce - if you have not already purchased something (just now spotted this thread), and your little one likes hands-on experiences, I would highly recommend the 460 Piggy Back Transportation Loader - my 9 year old has played with this since I got it a couple of years ago. It's very straight-forward, totally manual, and has very few things a 3 yr old could break off. My grandson has literally spent hours entertaining himself on this thing with his trucks, Minecraft figures, even Pokémon added as accessories!
