2 quick questions abut this. I just got one of these. It is very nice. I took it apart to have a look at the smoke unit. As expected the old resistor was toast. Unidentifiable.

What value resistor?

Should there be any batting? It's pretty small. The old resistor does have a fabric sleeve.

The wiring is for s**t. Lots of white wire attached to color wire. I found a wiring diagram and am going to have a go at cleaning up the wiring. I love the mars light on the back.

TIA, Frank

It certainly seems repairable. I have already found the last 2 links and downloaded those documents.

The resistors I have seem a bit bigger than the original one. The original resistor was a wire wound ceramic, are these typically smaller than the more common ones I got for my MPC steamers? And again wicking yes or no? It had none in it, but it seems to me that wicking would be better than just having the smoke fluid sitting in the bow,

Or does anyone know where I can get a 17606-100 smoke unit, the only ones I saw on e**y were used and I am skeptical since I already have a used one (the one in the caboose). At least if I had a new one I could take it apart and see if there is wicking.

Thanks, Frank
