A friend of mine wants to restore a Lionel 8203 for his daughter. We think the e unit may be worn out. If so, how difficult is it to find a replacement? As I recall, this engine has the kind of e unit with the black lever that moves back and forth, not the silver one that moves side to side. All the e units I've seen on evilbay seem to be the ones with the side to side lever.

It should be just a regular 101-1 two position reverse(with a silver side-side lever just ahead of the cab) if this is the PRR red-stripe steam locomotive.
Those pendulum style reverse units rarely fail.
As Rob indicated above, all 8203's came with the 101 two-position reverse unit.
Not sure exactly what you mean by a "black lever that moves back and forth." Are you perhaps referring to the 8803? If that's the case, then that locomotive doesn't have a reverse unit -- that switch is how you make it reverse.

Rob identified your loco as having a 101-1 e-unit. Generally, they do not wear out. What is the problem?
