Rather than highjacking the Titanic thread, I thought I'd start a new one to show the 1978 Lionel Star Wars slot cars that I mentioned in the other thread. There is a pair of cars being offered on EBay right now:

This picture is from the listing (I am not selling this lot)

Update: It seems that the Star wars comments were removed from the other thread. Hopefully starting this new thread will not be seen as bad behavior.

A little more information:

In 1975 Lionel decided to try applying the Lionel name to some new products, and gave slotcars a try. Power Passers were a slotless HO race car system.
In 1978 they marketed a #3850 Star Wars Duel at Death Star Racing Game.
I don't see any Power Passers stuff listed in the Lionel catalogs after 1978.

This is very intriguing. Since those slotcars are a Lionel product, clearly they had to obtain a license to use the Star Wars theme.

One can wonder if Lionel would consider revisiting the Star Wars universe by developing a RTR O Gauge train set targeted to the mass consumer.

As the decades pass, Star Wars remains as popular as ever and continues to permeate pop culture -- worldwide. As a baby boomer who actually saw the first three Star Wars movies in glorious 70mm at New York City's Ziegfeld theater when they were originally released, I would gladly purchase a Star Wars O Gauge train set from Lionel (or MTH).

Not to thread jack, but I would also enjoy O Gauge trains themed after Indiana Jones -- or even better -- Jurassic Park. Can you imagine the popularity of a dinosaur set?

Star Wars would make for a very fun O Gauge set -- if it was done right. After all, there were no trains in Star Wars. But the potential is still there for some out-of-this-world rolling stock.

I'd certainly go for a Star Wars themed set or two.  Here are my ideas for my dream sets (these ideas are freely given, Lionel or MTH...).

I'd like a pair of F3 sets with decorated PS-1 boxcars depicting various characters.  In one set, the F3's could be painted black and red and the boxcars could depict Darth Vader, Darth Maul, Darth Tyranus (Count Dooku), and Darth Sidious (Emperor Palpatine) - a Sith set, as it were.  The other set would be a Jedi set, painted in white (with blue, green and purple accents where appropriate) with boxcars depicting Yoda, Obiwan Kenobi, Mace Windu, and Luke Skywalker.  Later, they could offer Anakin Skywalker as an add on car for both sets (good Anakin and pre-suit dark-side Anakin), and they could also offer a Qui-Gon Jinn as an add-on, as well.

They could also do some interesting freight cars, like a Death Star exploding boxcar...

As regards an "Indiana Jones" train, I recall Model Railroading magazine having a DIY article quite some years ago for the Circus Train from the begining scenes of the third movie (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade). But even with the new Blu-Ray releases later this year, I don't think there'd be a demand for a theme train.

I'd like a Tatooine shortline train set. Probably couldn't have a steam locomotive in such a dry place. There could be a tank car for water, a boxcar, a flat car carrying a landspeeder, an operating stock car full of banthas, a gondola full of junk for the Jawas and a drovers caboose for the few people that would ride.

Maybe an add-on private varnish car for Jabba the Hutt.

Maybe some sand people to rob the train every so often

What, no Jar Jar Binks or Jabba the Hutt?

What about C3PO or R2D2?

Without Droids and Storm Troopers Star Wars is nothing more than Star Trek set in a galaxy far, far away.

Well, they could do a Jabba the Hut slime-filled clear tank car.

And they could modify the Transylvania coffin mint car... just put "R.I.P. Jar Jar" on it and many fans would be happy.

I would also go for a box car that had, in big letters painted on it, "Dang it, Greedo did NOT shoot first!"

As for the droids, they could do a variant of the cop-chasing-hobo gondola with C-3PO chasing R2-D2 around.

And a passenger car could be painted in Imperial Grey and lettered "Stormtrooper Transport" - maybe with Stormtrooper figures in the seats...
