Just got back from my local Lowe's in Santa Clarita, CA and see that they have a version of their G-scale battery-operated set on sale for $49.95. This is a "Lionel Lines" steam loco with (I think) 3 cars plus plastic track, power-pack and remote controller. Pretty good deal, it seems to me.

Same price as it was for several years now.
I know Lionel wants to go for some "low end" sales, but it should be ashamed to put its name on what looks pretty much like a chintzy "Nu-Brite" set.

Totally agree. The thing is, I don't even hate the cheap Christmas sets. There is a time and place for them and I even own a couple sets. They give me enjoyment in a different way than our typical trains. But this particular set is is REALLY cheap and uninteresting. Very little detail and just very cheap looking. For those new to trains, this may be their first and only experience with Lionel and they will forever associate Lionel with junk. Very bad move on their part and disappointed to see them doing this for a second year now.
Here is Home Depot's Christmas train. It's much more interesting and good looking. http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/...d=10051#.UHi7Y4ZBjIU
and it's G gauge. Truly a child's toy.
If these are truly put in the hands of 5-6 year olds, it will be "Under the tree December 25th... in the garbage January 25th!"

It's a $50 POS. Better off just lighting your $50 on fire.
