I recently acquired a Command Ready Lionel 6-18084 Santa Fe Hudson with a signal sounds tender that can be upgraded to railsounds. I have the radio board to make it command control and have ordered the railsounds kit from Lionel to make the upgrades. The manual was unclear if I could make it command and then upgrade to railsounds, or if I had to upgrade the sounds first, then install the radio board. Does any body know if I can upgrade to command with the signal sounds or do I wait until I can upgrade to railsounds?

Just keep the switch set to Signal sounds, replace the e unit board with the R2LC and program it, program it as signal sounds, once you put the RS board in, reprogram it with railsounds.

I am not sure if the signal sounds power board is the same as the railsounds power board, there should be 3 boards on the motherboard, R2LC, signal sounds with chip and the sound power board with the copper coil life saver on it.

The motor driver motherboard is in the loco, it has 2 sockets. One has the motor driver, the other is for the R2LC. The sound motherboard is in the tender and has the signal sounds board in one socket and the other socket is for the railsounds power board.

Thank you for responding, I had completely forgotten there was a signal sounds program option. I'm more used to DCS although I have upgraded a few conventional to command using the ERR kits.

I have not done a Steam command upgrade, only diesel. It is good to know they split the motherboards for future reference.

This is something I am addressing in a PS1 to ERR Cruise Commander upgrade in a Premier 4-8-4 and fiddling with options to either keep the split boards or move it all to the tender where there is plenty of room.

Ron, Are you going with TMCC because you don’t use DCS? With everything in the tender both options require a new tether. MTH gives you one, ERR requires you come up with one unless you put the receiver and motor driver in the engine. Then the PS1 4 wire tether is sufficient. PS3 is pretty much a drop in install. ERR is more expensive and more work which includes isolating shells for the antenna and generating chuff signals. Choices involve trade offs.

Pete,

I have several of the Steam upgrades, a PS2 and a PS3. I am mostly a Legacy/TMCC runner but do have a few DCS.

I have wanted to do a premier upgrade PS1 for a while, it just took finding a pair at a good price. I finally found a set of 20-3014 and 20-3015 for under $700.

With putting the gear in the tender I know I have to swap in a 10 pin tether, of which I have plenty, As for antenna, I have used a friends with the antenna provided in the CC package hot glued to the tender ceiling and it worked well.

I am looking for a parts exploded diagram so I can figure out the wiring, This is partly to learn how, our club has many older locomotives and with DCS prices soaring, an option to keep the clubs budget intact.

I have not done a steamer yet, and once I get a look at a schematic and crack one open, may opt for the PS3 kit.

Ron
