I just purchased a Lionel GP30, a real nice model. I had planed to fix the pilots and two rail it but!!. I turned her over and I find that only one axel on each truck is driven. Im guessing this affects the pulling power, especially since the traction tyres will go in the conversion. Ive had a look at a few photo's of this model and the drive seems to come with all axels driven as well. So how good or bad are the drives. I can't think What Lionel was thinking here. Lionel met a lot of market resistance when they went to a mechanism with only half of the axles powered. They switched back to all wheel drive on their geeps rather quickly. However, in 3 rail, the units with the two traction tire equipped axles powered do pull well. The mechanism is actually very good mechanically. It has well designed bearings and low friction, features which provide excellent starting and low speed performance.
Thanks Ted. that answers my question, can the trucks be swoped out for the for axel type ?....
Stephen-
I believe the trucks can be swapped out, as long as both are compatible with the Liondrive motors. I believe Lionel part #620-838-1770 is for the GP30 truck with all axles powered.
