Bought a Lionel 2026 recently and it did not run, it was shorting out. Upon investigation I found the e-unit drum was lop sided in the e-unit. So I go to remove it and I had a hard time getting the e-unit out of the chassis, something was hanging up. I noticed one of the nubs from the e-unit drum was sticking out into the chassis of the loco preventing it to be released.

I finally got it out and I found this unusual e-unit drum with a metal rod thru the drum? I had never seen one like this and was wondering if this was Lionel issue or did someone do a repair at some point in time? The rod does move thru the drum.

Thanks for any input

My buddy has a machined jig for drilling out the center of an e-unit drum to replace the nubs. He did not make it, he told me how he came by it, but I do not recall.

I have seen a similar problem on an early MPC steam engine. The pin on the e-unit's plunger was a bit too long, and it was binding on the metal sides of the motor. A couple of swipes with a file fixed it.
