I have a Lionel 38056 M1a with a fan driven smoke unit. When you start the engine up smokes fine. 5 minutes running the fan shuts off. Replaced the board on the unit. if you put DC to the motor it runs. Any suggestions ?

Bad motor possibly. How much voltage you putting to that motor. Its designed to run on no more than 5v
Replace the fan motor, that will eliminate any possibility that it's the motor. Since you've replaced the board, the motor is the only other piece that could fail providing the smoke unit is still getting voltage.
The other failure possibility is the regulator module is crapping out, they are a common failure item in that vintage locomotive.

I notice the hot box reefer has a similar regulator, but the part number ends with F02. I wonder what the differences are.
The Hot Box reefer was designed to run conventionally, that probably changed a couple of parts values. If you run it command, I suspect you could use one of these.
I'll try the motor first. if it still does I'll replace the regulator module. Thanks for the info
