1935 the tinplate toy train world is rapidly transitioning into the Scale Model Train world .. Lionel the tinplate giant took it's first step to scale with the UP City of Portland in 1934. The Hiawatha a faithful Die cast scale engine was introduced the following year ...however as a cost saving only used the City of Portland cars to pull which was not close to correct.
Walthers was quick to seize this moment to offer proper scale Hiawatha cars for the Lionel engine to pull. Walthers also offered services to modify the Lionel engine with scale flanges , re-gearing and proper tender trucks. The modified Lionel engine pulling a string of the Walthers cars quickly became a favorite train on most of the large O scale club layouts across the nation . Lionel produced the engine 1935-41 Walthers offered the cars / kits 1935-50's.
