Swafford,
It would be a nice addition, no doubt about it, but lets get Lionel to supply the Legacy Crane Car 1st!
Still waiting

I'd also like it to have realistic drive speeds and gearing for the wheels! It would be nice to actually be able to position this with the drive wheels like the prototype works. They're so twitchy now that it's close to impossible to use them for positioning, and the gearing doesn't lend itself to slowing them down.
How about also sizing it for scale containers.
I modified mine so I could pick up Lionel scale containers. I shortened the bottom jaws and removed a lot of the flash from the side of the arms. It worked much better after that and changing the drive speeds for the traverse and lift. The most hopeless part for me is still the wheel drive characteristics.
Scale Sized Mi-Jack Transloader is the way to make it.
More weight at the bottom, so it is not top heavy.

That would be a good item to have, especially command control. I will take one!
I am getting the impression that Lionel is going to try and make some more command control accessories, this would definitely be a good one to add to the to-do list, or move to the top of the to-do list if already on there.
Lionel has the Gantry Crane as shown on page 28 and 29 of the 2014 volume 2 catalog. Maybe a Mi-Jack will be made out of the crane. LOCOMOTION
This is Lionel's Intermodal Crane, I think it was in the 2014 Catalog. 6-12741
It is not Legacy, but it is the one you show in your photos.
It seems to work well.

There are some for sale, used.

The 6-12741 UP Intermodal crane was from 1989 as the YouTube video header shows, not 2014.
I don't think there's ever been one cataloged since the 6-22922 SP version back in 1998, but I could be mistaken.

Not mistaken... that is correct.
Notch 6 said Lionel was working on up grading there stuff, I know they were talking about post war stuff mostly, but they need to replace the plastic gears with metal, mine (I don't remember which) doesn't lift or go down do to a broken gear; a very common problem. Outside of that I found it great.
I have the original Lionel Mi-Jack crane and it works well with the remote control levers that are easy to mount close to the crane and track where you work.
To me a legacy version adds a lot more cost to the item and more complexity. Keep it simple and cheap! Keep the legacy for running trains extra remotes are expensive if you have a few people running trains.

Found this thread and others similar by searching. I am about to get one of these, the Modesto & Empire Traction special version, and the photos are most helpful. I will plan on using Super Streets straights for the yard, and I appreciate all the good information posted by Gunrunnerjohn and others about proper lubrication and modifications. I have a goal of getting it on a module by February 2017.
Yes I would love to see a robust reissue of the MI-Jack intermodal crane, IMHO it needs the following upgrades:
- accepts both scale and semi scale containers
- can lift todays 1:48-1:50 plastic and die cast trailers
- trailer lift arms move up and sideways[90 degrees] when lifting containers
- metal gears and gear boxes- NO PLASTIC GEARS!
- use of electro- magnet or metal rods with a foam covering for lifting containers
- smd LEd working spotlights on top
- Flashing led warning lights
- diesel sound
I would also like to see the Legacy intermodal crane. I would order one as soon as they are available.
