Lionel KW Transformer Rectifier Disc Replacement

Hi,

I am newbe and wonder if anyone can tell me how to replace the rectifier disc in my Lionel KW Transformer? Should I replace the disc with a new disc or with a stud diode?

The wistle on my tender sounds sickly and the engine slows down considerably when the whistle lever is activated.

Any advice will greatly appreciated.
