Mine too had the window problems and a damaged shell. After a trip to Lionel all was made well. The detail sounds and action are fantastic. Great play value.
Same here. Sent all 6 cars back to Lionel for window issues. They fixed them all plus replaced a shell I did not know was broken and door gears too!. They paid shipping both ways. Great set once all was repaired.
I had the same problem with the windows on the R-16 cars. I talked with Mike at York about the windows and they gave me some glue to glue the windows back in. And since I drive to York each day of the show, I took the 2 car add on cars with me since one of the cars had some extra parts loose in the car. So Mike recommended me to send both the set & add on back to LSC and they would fix everything and test run the R-16 to make sure that everything was operating correctly. All I can say is that Lionel's service is great under Mike. I received everything back very quickly, and a list of what had been done to each piece. As I read the list of items, this is when I learned of the problem with the door motors and that they had replace 2 of them.
The strange thing was that I received the R-16 and R-30 sets basically together at the same time. I don't remember exactly but one set & and the add on cars of the other set came together in the same shipment and then about a week later I received the other ones. And what was very strange was that not one of the windows in the R-30 set cars were not loose at all

I had the same problem with the entire 6-car set on the R16. Just about every window was loose or had fallen out. I actually was missing 3 and had to order them from Lionel Customer Service (free, of course). I glued them all back in myself. They run great. I had no problems with the 6-car R30 set, however.
I really love the colors on the R16, moreso than the R30. I would love to pick up the R27 set too, but it would be restricted to O72 curves and nothing less. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
One of the best Lionel items ever produced.
They must have used the same glue on their Trackmobiles, because they have a tendency to pop out too.
I love this set! it had the window issues, which i took care of, then i set out to enhance the cars, starting with the two end cars. I removed the shells and blacked out the door motor box so that they could not be seen through the windows(i hated the window shade look), then i painted and added a motorman and painted the cab. Then i ordered, painted and installed a pair of transit couplers to the end cars since they did not function anyway.I formed a step out of a T 50 staple and glued it below the motor mans cab and scratch built the antenna from a plastruct T moulding. Dropped the side frames to the trucks, painted the wheels with that nice rust mix, painted and airbrushed the car body and trucks with guidance from pictures posted at nysubway.org. the plan is to populate the cars with figures and for the "locomotive, i blacked out the grey motor box and plan to add cut out photos of "passengers so that when the doors open, you see something!at some point around winter, maybe some graffiti to add the late 70's experience i remembered in high school!
