The common issue is with the capacitors - they dry out and become ineffective. The SOS board uses through hole components and is easy to repair with a 30W soldering iron, some 60/40, and replacement caps.

Thanks for the information.  I am electrically challenged, and this sounds beyond my meager capabilities.  Can you recommend anyone who does this repair?

In Ohio, I was impressed with Dixie Union Station when I visited. While I personally have not had service done by them, they are a Lionel Authorized Service Station.
