In a recenr Forum subject on Maine trains, a number of folks show a Lionel Chessie System MPC box car # 9740-the car has the Chessie System/ C&O name on it with a secondary tag of MEC. Greenberg describes the car coming in the #1460 Grand National set-a set which appears to have come without individual boxes. But multiple listings show the car for separate sale often in either a Type 2 or 3 MPC box-usually with a label on the end giving the number/description. I presume that indicates that the car was available for separate sale-or have many sellers found boxes ( and added a label) for the cars. Can any MPC experts clear this up-and also describe the secondary MEC on this Chessie car? Thanks in advance-turtle7

Available in the set and separate sale.   It’s one of the more common 9700s.

Not sure on the MEC reporting mark.  Back then Lionel requested photos from the railroads and Chessie may have sent a photo of a car in pool service with Maine Central, and Lionel just copied it onto the car.  MEC and BAR both used their boxcars seasonally and would provide them to other roads during the off-season.  There may have been some special arrangement where the cars were registered to MEC but Chessie used them 75% of the time.  That is about the only plausible explanation I can give.
