Lionel O21 switch info

The bulb is probably a 1447

They were made 1915-1937, with various design changes throughout their production as technology improved and designs were refined. While I am not well versed in their history, of note is the change circa 1923 to the area near the lantern which was enclosed (along with a few other minor changes at that time). Also of note, and more important, was the adapting/retrofitting/redesigning of the switch base to accept the solenoid mechanism of the powered 012 circa 1927 (becoming the 011 circa 1933). This also required substantial redesign of the track itself, particularly noteworthy being updated swivel rails and switch frog and the addition of primitive guide rails.

Since they were basically the only option for 0 gauge switches from Lionel until the introduction of the venerable 022 and 042 in 1938, they seem to have been well-designed and thus successful and well-liked.
