Hello everybody,

I finally got my track laid and I am trying it out  and having a very frustrating time  with  some switches  shorting when the train runs over them. Right now it is happening on one of my post war 07 2 witches. Everything is ok when I turn my track power on, cab 1 Lionel controller and using a Lionel T1 duplex engine. When the engine runs over to track the switch goes in between curved and straight and when I try to straighten it out it buzzes like crazy and wants to stay in that shorted position. If I turn the power off and then on again everything is ok until an engine runs over the track and the same thing happens. When it is in a shorted mode  I cannot turn it in One Direction  but I can turn it in another Direction without buzzing. . It happened on one switch and I replaced it and that switch seems to be ok and now it started on another switch. What in the world is going on ?????? Please help so I can get this layout working finally.

Much thanks, Jerry

There is no such thing as a post-war (1945-1969) O-72 switch... Lionel made pre-war switches with O-72 curves in tubular (Lionel 711) and T-Rail (Lionel 731). In the modern era, a tubular O-72 switch was made in O22 style , the 65165 series. Sounds like it could be the anti-derailing feature - first thing to check is that you've got the insulators in place as appropriate and the controllers wired up correctly.

Note the insulated pins are on different rails on the 022 switches (in download below) and 072 switches (in bmoran4's link above).

A very handy booklet for postwar wiring has a link posted under the OGR Forum topic ELECTRICAL REFERENCE MATERIALS & MANUALS .  Here's the same link for Dad's 1954 copy of Lionel Trains and Accessories .    Download and see page 26 for Switch installations.

Jerry, how many transformers are you using?  If more than one, are they phased?
