There is a plastic ridge parallel to the bed rail that powers the center rail of the table. It holds the matching pickup away from the rail. There are notches in the ridge that let the pickup contact the bed rail at the proper locations. If a train is on the tracks, the light on the controller will light up, but the train won't move until the proper button is pressed. If there is no train, the light on the shack and the light on the controller will illuminate. (I don't recall whether the light on the shack will illuminate if the train is there).
I had a base with that ridge badly worn and worn pickups. The indexing feature did not work.

According to Lionel, the reissued base will work fine with the postwar version. I haven't tried the combination.
