I just bought a used North Pole Pylon and it's pretty loud and makes a "rat a tat tat" noise when powered. Is this normal?

No, it's not what I would consider 'normal'.
Last I heard our 'Santa Claus sleigh/reindeer' version of this run, it was the usual muted grind-grind-grind-grind gnoise, But that's par for a Lionel excessory, IMHO.
If this was the Snoopy/Red Baron pylon, I would think the 'rat-a-tat-a-tat-a-tat' gnoise would be kinda kool...unless it was the portent of doom.
Whatever.

I have a Lionel deco with plane pylon. If you forward to 5:55 in the video below you can hear mine operating and compare it to the sound you hear on yours.
Thanks Keith. Your pylon definitely doesn't seem as loud, and it doesn't seem to make a "clacking" noise like mine.
