Lionel RW transformer question.

I recently acquired an RW transformer. The control handle was not on it. I've found a handle and was hoping someone could tell how to be certain that I have it oriented correctly.  I know that once it's fully seated it will travel 100 - 110 degrees  of arc, but my concern is that it's not 180 degrees off (oriented backwards).  The transformer  hums when I plug it in, but my POS multi tester doesn't read any voltage from the terminals.  Should I just hook it up to some track & put a loco on and hope for the best or what? Any suggestions?

 my concern is stated in the third sentence  & fourth sentence of my post.
When I got the RW, the fellow showed me that the post/spindle would spin 360 degrees and my concern is that the spindle is correctly oriented when I put the handle on, not 180 degrees off. I guess I should have been a bit clearer about the spindle being able to rotate 360 degrees, and avoided confusion.

I took a leap of faith & opened the case and oriented oriented the spindle with the D shaped fiber washer. 

Now reading C.W's reply, I'll open it back up and check out the arm.. but dinners almost on the table & the Big Bang is coming on in a while, so will have to delay that leap of faith til after dinner& tBB is over...

Thanks Guys, this is my first attempt at going inside a transformer and I' was hesitant to open the case.

I took the RW apart & found the the dog ears on the contact control arm are broken off, so I'll be ordering the control shaft, fiber washers & new control arm to make repairs.

 

Thank You John for the nudge to open it up & look inside.

Thank You CW for the link to Olsen's manual & parts list,

it gave me the information to look & see what's wrong.

 

I'll order the parts tomorrow & hopefully have it repaired soon.
