Has anyone been successful removing side frames that are staked in to get at the center axle for replacment of the worm gear/wheel.

Motor is slipping and gear looks worn out on edge. Seems like a lot of work for this specific engine. This is an all metal truck, but the unit is staked together.

I was thinking of trying to move the gear on the axle to engage the good side of the gear, but I am afraid of damaging the truck.

Any repair hints on this one? G

You can take a dremel tool and file down the staked on areas. Remove the side trucks and attend to the wheels and gear. When complete, put the side trucks back and use super glue to hold the truck side frames to the motor plate. Jim Barrett did this in his back shop video from OGR, The Video, I have done it myself and it works.

Many moons ago I purchased a pair duck billed pliers and had a machinist friend machine the jaws at the nose flat. I could place the jaws flat next to the stake, then apply a little pressure to the stake, turn pliers 90 degrees and repeat. You do this at all stake's and with a small screw driver you can pry things apart. This saves the material and it can be re-staked. I have used this procedure on post war and up. The only other suggestion is to buy a good set of pliers (not the ones from harbor freight).
