With the engine stopped it draws 2 amps, even with tender not connected.

Have not checked continuity board is in the FEF 835 steam engine that cause the current draw?

ITEM NUMBER is 682810

Any ASC TECH would be appreciated

Please remember the lower the track voltage, the higher the amps to obtain the same wattage/power. Not sure how the control boards are configured, but if they are trying to put the same power to the smoke unit, they will pull more amps from the lower voltage source (track voltage).

Do you have the capability to run in command control?  If so, how many amps does it pull at 18 volts track voltage with smoke unit on and then with smoke unit off?

Also, I would carefully inspect the smoke unit and check the resistance across the elements and amp pull of the fan motor.  At their correct voltage, they will not pull 2 amps.  That is too much.

Again that’s 2A at 9VAC?? That using 18W if we say we normally see around 1A with 18VAC and the smoke on again that’s 18W.

it’s just pulling out the necessary current for the provided voltage.

Hi Marty it tells exactly what the issues @ 9.00 volt current is 2 amps is you raise the voltage should be 18 volts the amps could go to 10 amps not willing to risk cooking boards that cost $200. you would burn up boards is that how you trouble shoot by smoking  boards  unnecessarily !

no offense intended just looking for every bodies input to solve my issues!

Shut everything off in engine with switches underneath. Take another reading, also take a reading with nothing on track. Than let’s us know, also turn items on one at a time, let’s see what the draw is then. Also you can raise voltage slightly and see what the amperage is, this way you may see a Plateau of the numbers. Also do you have a good meter that measures amps? If so drop it into the circuit let’s compare the numbers.

Not really.  I don't see anywhere in this thread that "Jon Grayson" posted or that would have made sense.  Did I miss the post?

Why are you looking for an MTH ASC for a Lionel Legacy locomotive?

Unplug everything but the 4-pin power/motor connector and see what the situation is.  If it is drawing excessive current with just the 4-pin power/motor connector plugged in, it's almost surely the RCMC or a short in the motor brush wires to frame ground.  It could also be the lousy Canon motor has a shorted brush, that's happened to a number of them for me.

If the excessive power draw goes away with only the power/motor  connector plugged in, it's likely a short to the frame somewhere else in the wiring.  Find the short and you'll likely solve the problem.
